An enlarged prostate gland is not a dangerous medical condition. It’s just part of the aging process all men have to go through.
None of us can prevent aging. As we grow older, a lot of changes happen in our body. At times, the changes can leave us confused and dumbfounded. Sooner or later, we develop some kind of health problem, and the news of it comes as a shock.
One such scenario is when the doctor informs us that we are suffering from benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or in plain English, an enlarged prostate gland.
The Problem of Enlarged Prostate Gland
Enlarged prostate gland is a common condition in older men. As a person grows older, the size of prostate gland grows more than its normal size. In most cases, prostate enlargement is not a serious problem and there is nothing to worry about.
It is usually due to aging and there may not be any other underlying cause to this problem. However, there are a number of side effects arising out of enlarged prostate gland which can cause difficulties to the patient.
The Urination Problem
The most common side effect of an enlarged prostate is the urination problem. As the prostate gland enlarges, it presses against the urinary track causing a minor blockage.
Due to this blockage, urine may not flow as easily or freely as before. So the person will feel the urge to urinate frequently. Moreover the person will have difficulty in stopping urination completely.
This problem can cause difficulties in the life of a person. It is not a dangerous condition but nevertheless an extremely uncomfortable one.
If this condition is not treated in early stages, the problem gets worse. The patient can take medicines prescribed by his doctor in order to treat this condition. In some rare cases, he may need surgery if the problem becomes severe.
Let me repeat once again that enlargement of prostate gland in itself is not a serious medical condition. However, several difficulties might arise in the life of a person if he suffers from enlarged prostate. Due to this, early treatment of the problem has to be sought.
